Ryan Coogler’s vampire horror film Sinners has shattered the Oscars record books, earning an unprecedented 16 nominations at the 98th Academy Awards. The achievement marks the most nominations ever received by a single film in Oscar history, surpassing the previous record of 14 held by Titanic and La La Land.
The nominations were announced Thursday in Los Angeles, setting the stage for the March 15 ceremony at the Dolby Theatre. Conan O’Brien will host the ceremony for the second consecutive year, with live broadcast on ABC and streaming on Hulu.
Sinners Dominates the Nominations
Sinners dominated across nearly every major category, earning nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects and Best Casting. The film also marked Michael B. Jordan’s first-ever Oscar nomination for his dual performance as twin brothers Smoke and Stack.
The 16 nominations represent a milestone that many believed would never be broken. Titanic and La La Land each reached 14 nominations in their respective years, with Titanic going on to win Best Picture. Industry analysts had long predicted that the record would stand indefinitely given the Academy’s tendency to spread nominations across multiple films.
Sinners changed that calculus entirely. The film, set in 1930s Mississippi during the Great Migration, proved both a critical darling and a box office phenomenon. Warner Bros., which produced the film through its Proximity Media banner, now leads all studios with 30 total nominations.
The Competitive Best Picture Race
While Sinners dominated, the Best Picture race remains remarkably open. The ten nominees include Sinners, One Battle After Another (Warner Bros.) with 13 nominations, Frankenstein (Netflix) with 9 nominations, Marty Supreme (A24), Hamnet (Focus Features), Train Dreams (Netflix), Sentimental Value (Neon), The Secret Agent (Neon), F1 (Apple), and Bugonia (Focus Features).
Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another emerged as the strongest competitor with 13 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. The film, a searing examination of radical politics in 1970s California, has been considered the awards season frontrunner since its September premiere.
Notable Acting Categories
The acting categories feature several notable storylines. Leonardo DiCaprio earned another Best Actor nomination for his performance in One Battle After Another, marking his sixth nod in the category. Timothée Chalamet received his third acting nomination for Marty Supreme, making him one of the youngest performers to achieve three acting nominations.
Teyana Taylor received her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in One Battle After Another. This marks a significant milestone for the artist in her transition from music to film.
A New Category Makes Its Debut
This year marks the first time casting directors have been recognized with a competitive Oscar category. The inaugural nominees include Francine Maisler for Sinners, Cassandra Kulukundis for One Battle After Another, Nina Gold for Hamnet, Jennifer Venditti for Marty Supreme and Gabriel Domingues for The Secret Agent.
The addition of Best Casting as the Academy’s 24th competitive category represents the most significant expansion of Oscar categories in decades. Casting directors have long campaigned for recognition, arguing that their work is fundamental to a film’s success.
Looking Ahead to March 15
The ceremony will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, continuing a tradition that dates back decades. O’Brien’s return as host follows a well-received tenure last year, when he brought a self-deprecating humor to proceedings that resonated with audiences.
The March 15 ceremony will determine whether Sinners can convert its historic nomination count into corresponding wins, or whether One Battle After Another will emerge as the year’s dominant film. Either way, the 98th Academy Awards will be remembered as a landmark moment in Oscar history.
